There are seven groups of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC): Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Group clubs are open to owners of all breeds from one of the seven AKC groups. The group clubs are eligible to hold shows, obedience trials, and performance events for dogs in their group. The AKC recognizes the following herding breeds: Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres, Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog and Swedish Vallhund. Foundation stock herding breeds may also be eligible for shows/trials. The Alaska Herding Group Club is a club for the owners of herding breed dogs. Of course, they may have other breeds as well and some of our performance events are open to other breeds/all breeds as the AKC allows. If you own a herding dog or are interested in learning more about herding dogs we invite you to join us and Welcome! For a membership application click here. We encourage participation of herding dogs in all AKC events open to herding breeds including conformation, tracking, obedience, rally, herding and more. Our next meeting will be at Pizza Man in Eagle River at 7:00pm on April 27th, 2009. Directions: Take the South Eagle River Exit. Turn Left onto Artillery Road. You will see Johnson’s Tire Service. Take the road in Front of Johnson’s and Pizza Man is at the end of the mini mall right next door to Johnson’s. Their phone number is 694-3777 if you get lost.
